History For Lunathion's temple, the city's patron goddess, Luna, was crafted from a single block of marble hewn from the famed Caliprian Quarries by the Melanthos River up north. The temple was the first thing built upon the city’s founding five hundred years ago. The location of the city was selected precisely because of the way the Istros River bends through the land in the shape of a crescent. Thus why the city is sometimes referred to as the Crescent City. There are seven gates in the city, each set along a ley line running through Lunathion. They had been designed as a quick way for the guards in the districts to speak to each other centuries ago. People merely had to place a hand against the golden disk in the center of the pad and spoke, the wielder’s voice would travel to the other Gates, a gem lighting up with the district from which the voice originated. Today the gates are used as a tourist attraction, due to technology such as mobile phones. The plot of his latest can be summed up with minimal effort, which is fine if it gives us at least that much entertainment. EARTH AND BLOOD: STREAM IT OR SKIP IT? The Gist: Somewhere, some kind of heist is happening. And an inept one, at that: Four guys in standard-issue head-to-toe black garb carrying standard-issue firepower bust into a police station and standard-issue pretty much blow it. Two of them end up dead. The other two make it in and out of the evidence room with eight kilos of cocaine — somehow, because it was either edited out of the movie or the director didn’t have enough coverage. Cut to Said (Sami Bouajila), fresh from a CAT scan. Bad news. Carcinoma. He stops to see his sister-in-law, a character we never see in the movie again, which eventually makes us wonder why the scene is even in the movie, and tells her he’ll have to sell the sawmill he owns, that her father used to own. She’ll get her cut, he assures her, with utter superfluousness in retrospect. Meanwhile, one of Said’s idiot employees, Yanis (Samy Seghir), meets with his half-brother who’s one of the thieves who didn’t die in the opening sequence. The thief who didn’t die in the opening sequence has decided not to turn the drugs over to the Lord of the Drugs, and Yanis will hide them for him. It’s not a great idea, because the Lord of the Drugs, Adama (Eriz Ebouaney) is a real neckbreaker. He finds the two thieves who didn’t die in the opening sequence, makes sure the second one dies by breaking his neck with his bare hands, beating the first one to pulp. Speaking of pulp, back at Said’s sawmill, Said doesn’t tell his hearing-impaired daughter Sarah (Sofia Lesaffre) he’s sick. Said contacts the guy who wants to buy the mill. Yanis mills around a bit, until Said finds the cocaine. Said then calls the cops, who come out to investigate. The end — no! That’s a lie. Said DOESN’T call the cops. Instead, he gets his shotgun and farts around a bit all stern and serious-like and waits until one of the neckbreaker’s decidedly non-diplomatic representatives shows up, followed by the neckbreaker himself, with five of his goons, thus endangering Said and his daughter and the sawmill, the resale value of which would conceivably drop if any of its various sharp and pointy implements were used on humans instead of logs. Photo: Netflix What Movies Will It Remind You Of? : I recently caught up with the most recent Rambo movie, Rambo: Last Blood, and Earth and Blood is sort of the French version of it. I don’t make the comparison lightly. Performance Worth Watching: Bouajila and Lesaffre seem like they could be pretty good with a decent screenplay. Notably, this isn’t a decent screenplay. Memorable Dialogue: “We’re not in a position to negotiate! ” Said says, long after he easily could have averted the situation in which they’re not in a position to negotiate. Sex and Skin: None. Our Take: Clocking in at 80 minutes, Earth and Blood is lean and… lean. So lean, it feels like it’s missing a few scenes. It’s also mean, I guess, in the sense that it exists primarily to be a display of somewhat tedious sadistic bloodlust that could all have been avoided had the screenplay not engaged in copious amounts of pure, uncut irrationality. Logic? More like schmogic, from Said’s inability to contact the authorities to the variety of bad decisions deployed by all characters down the stretch. The movie’s made with moderate visual give-a-shit by Leclercq, who wants to wind the suspense tight but kinda cheats during the tense moments by deploying indulgent slo-mo and a pulsing lub-dub-lub-dub soundtrack. Schmogic is forgivable when the film is stylish or virtuosic; this one is merely competent. Earth and Blood might be passable if some give-a-shit was used while writing these characters. These people are flat ‘n’ bland, and there’s absolutely no excuse for making a B-thriller with a one-note, boring, non-scenery-chewing bad guy like this one does. As for the hero — Said shows some generic resolve early in the movie, maybe some who-gives-a-shit because he’s very ill, but nary a hint of the faculty he shows in later scenes, when he proves himself capable of matter-of-factly blasting a hole in a man (and worse). I guess we hang on just to see how an everyman dispatches the bad guys like he’s not actually an everyman? Our Call: SKIP IT. B-movies can be great. I love B-movies. He visits his sister-in-law and tells her about his plans to sell his sawmill owned previously by her father, and assures she'll get her cut. One of his employees named Yanis, who is out on parole, meets up with his half-brother and one of the criminals who survived the heist. Deciding not to hand over the stolen drugs to the drug lord Adama, he tells Yanis to hide the drugs. Yanis switches cars with him and hides the drugs in the sawmill. On the other hand, Saïd tells his speech and hearing impaired daughter Sarah about his plans to use the money from selling the sawmill for her studies. He even meets a buyer and shows him the sawmill. An enraged Adama captures the two criminals who survived the heist and kills one of them on the spot by snapping his neck. Saïd starts to suspect Yanis and finds out drugs hidden in his truck. Locking Yanis inside the sawmill and telling Sarah to stay indoors, he takes a gun and drives away for help. He drives back when a woman tells him Adama and his men asked for his sawmill's address and she told them. Noticing Saïd, Adama's brother goes to retrieve the drugs. Sarah goes near the spot where Yanis is locked, and Adama's brother tries to threaten them with a gun, before being shot by Saïd. Freeing Yanis, Saïd takes him and Sarah inside their house. Adama arrives, and one of his men cuts off the telephone lines due to which contact with cops is severed. Yanis tells Saïd the cops will take 20 minutes to arrive. Adama watches his brother die in his arms, kills the second criminal and starts looking for the trio. Saïd hands Yanis a gun and sends Sarah along with him while he plans to keep the gang engaged. Seeing the two run, some of the henchmen chase after them. Saïd, on the other hand, lures many of them into traps and eliminates them one by one. However, he finds himself locked inside the sawmill which is soon set on fire. Saïd escapes in a sawmill vehicle, and this results in a car chase. Saïd succeeds in killing the henchmen, while Yanis gets stabbed in an attempt to help Sarah run for help. He dies as Saïd arrives, and Sarah rushes to an old man's house for help. Saïd on the other hand gets injured in further attacks and Adama holds him on gunpoint, before revealing his plans for avenging his brother's death.
